Blepharoplasty

Understanding drooping eyelids and the procedure that corrects it.

What is Blepharoplasty?

A blepharoplasty can be done for the upper or lower eyelid and is used to treat blocked vision, puffiness, sagging or drooping eyelids. It is a surgery that in the upper lid is done as either a functional surgery, to remove tissue to help someone see better; or as a cosmetic surgery to improve the heaviness of the upper lid appearance. In the lower lid, it is a cosmetic surgery where fat can be removed or repositioned and skin removed if needed to help with eyelid puffiness or lower lid bags.

The Procedure

It is an outpatient procedure meaning the patient goes home the day of surgery. The procedure begins with local anesthesia combined with intravenous sedation to ensure patient comfort. Depending on whether the upper or lower lids are being treated, the surgeon makes precise incisions along the natural lines of your eyelids, removes excess skin and fat, and then closes the incisions.

Benefits

The benefits of blepharoplasty extend beyond aesthetics. The upper lid Blepharoplasty can help with improvement of patient’s vision but can also improve their appearance. Blepharoplasty can greatly enhance the quality of life through improved vision and increased confidence.

Alternatives

While blepharoplasty is considered a safe and effective procedure, there may be alternatives to consider, including non-surgical treatments like injectable fillers or Botox, which can also rejuvenate the area around the eyes. As always, it’s important to consult your surgeon for the best treatment plan suited to your specific needs and expectations.

We urge patients to discuss any concerns with their surgeon, to ensure peace of mind prior to proceeding with surgery.
